If You Won't Own Anything, Then Who Will? Technocracy v. Communism. There is a Subtle Difference.

"The theory of communism may be summed up in the single sentence: Abolition of private property" Karl Marx "You'll own nothing" -- And "you'll be happy about it."  Klaus Schwab  At first glance, it appears that Marx and Schwab are kindred souls. However, while many people have asserted that the ideas of today's technocratic "elite" are communistic, that may not be entirely accurate.  Marx had a vision of a utopia that would see, at least in theory, humans elevated to an ideal of communal industries run by local communities for the benefit of each other. Yes, I know, as Freud noted in " Civilization and its Discontents " socialism sounds great, but it runs against basic rules of human nature in its assumptions.  Collectivism just doesn't work within a secular, societal, context. However, what many technocrats envision for our future could be labeled as "techno-feudalism" and, while its assumptions may also ru...

The Psychology of a Possible U.S. Civil War

" It is clearly not easy for man to give up the satisfaction of this inclination to aggression.  They do not feel comfortable without it.  The advantage which a comparatively small cultural group offers of allowing this instinct an outlet in the form of hostility against intruders is not to be despised. It is always possible to bind together a considerable number of people in love, so long as there are other people left over to receive the manifestations of their aggressiveness. " Sigmund Freud: Civilization and its Discontents . Ever find yourself angry at a brother, sister, parent or cousin? Sometimes the emotions can get you seeing red but then a while later you have put the differences aside? Yes, we tend to have far more long-term toleration of those who we are related to. And generally, even if we do have differences with a relative we would still tear into a non-relative who attacked them. Studies in anthropology and psychology show that genetics bond peop...

Do They Hate Trump More Than They Love Peace?

" Now this conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence—economic, political, even spiritual—is felt in every city, every Statehouse, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet, we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources, and livelihood are all involved. So is the very structure of our society.  In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. " Former US President Dwight Eisenhower "We are a warlike people, easily distracted from our assignment of preparing for the coming of the Lord. When enemies rise up, we commit vast resources to the fabrication of gods of stone and steel—ships, planes, missiles, fortifications—and depend on them for protection and deliverance. When t...

Is it time to reconsider our devotion to big sports?

“...films, football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult.” George Orwell, " 1984 " I have to admit, I am totally into people turning off professional football. Sure, I do not like it when players use a pre-game platform to kneel during the National Anthem as a form of protest.   However, my hopes would be that we could return sports to something less corporate in nature, and if the public’s reaction against this new controversy helps in that process then all the better.  Today professional sports have turned into something bigger than life for many people, and it is not just Americans and football – just look to people across the pond and their obsession with soccer. And this is nothing new really: look at how the gladiator games captivated audiences and were used by the ruling Roman elite not just to unify the population but also distract them from what was taking place in the empir...
